 Abstract:
The present study focuses on deposition of bioactive coatings of hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) by cold spray process. Different combinations of Al-based and Ti-based HA-TiO2 composite powders are synthesised using in-house powder processing techniques. These powders are subsequently used as the feedstock for deposition of bioactive coatings on different substrates.

Bioactive coatings produced via cold spray achieved thickness of 100-300 μm on different substrates materials. Due to the low thermal input, detrimental phase changes to the sprayed materials were eliminated and bioactive coatings have chemical composition identical to that of the initial powder feedstock.

This presents immense potential applications of these cold sprayed ceramic bioactive coatings as a medical implants material for orthopaedic and dental application. Properties of the coating can be carefully engineered to suit the specific application and can significantly extend the life span of an implant.
