 Abstract:
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted much attention as a potential reinforcement for enhancement of toughness and wear resistance of ceramic matrix due to their remarkable mechanical and thermal properties. Researchers have addressed the tribological behavior of CNT reinforced Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) composite at room temperature but no attempt has been made to study the tribological behavior of CNT reinforced ceramic composites at the elevated temperature. In the present study, the tribological behavior of plasma sprayed Al2O3-CNT coatings has been investigated at the elevated temperature using ball-on-disk tribometer. Wear and friction behavior of the Al2O3-CNT composite coating against silicon nitride (Si3N4) and tungsten carbide (WC) balls at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 873K is investigated. Detailed microstructural and topographical features of worn surface of plasma sprayed coatings is studied to understand the wear mechanism. Effect of CNTs on high temperature wear and friction behavior of coatings is also elucidated.
