 Abstract:
Cold spraying is a well-established technology for several materials and applications. Recent improvements of the spraying equipment allow for higher impact velocities and temperatures, thus ensuring better coating performance and widening the range of sprayable materials. This presentation reviews the general approach to exploit new powders. This comprises (i) impact simulations and calculation of critical velocities, based on the mechanical and thermal properties of the material; and (ii) stepwise optimization of impact conditions by fluid dynamic calculations for certain sets of process parameters, i.e. powder particle size, gas pressure, gas temperature, and nozzle geometry. Finally, a correlation between particle impact conditions within the ?window of deposition? and coating properties will be presented.
