Wire-arc-sprayed coatings of austenitic stainless and chromium steel have been widely applied to component parts of various machines and equipment owing to their low cost, good performance, and field applicability. A commercial stainless steel wire and containing wt 13.0% chromium steel wire were arc sprayed using a twin-wire-arc spray unit of Smartarc Equipment. Arc spraying was performed on a mild steel substrate under the optimum conditions as follows: arc current, 250A; atomizing pressure, 4 bar. Two different gases: air and argon were used as atomizing gases and Ar/H2 mixture were used as secodary gas during the deposition. To improve wire-arc-sprayed coatings, their oxide content and number of pores should be minimized. Oxide content and hardness values changed depend on gas type and air cap. Microhardness and bending strenght were measured and microstructural features were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscope.
