Off-line programming technology is more and more used in advanced robot assisted thermal spraying process, which offers excellent trajectory generation and process simulation. At present, many robot manufacturers provide their off-line programming softwares for generating and testing robot trajectory, such as RobotStudio(TM) from ABB. But one of the disadvantages of these softwares is that it is rather difficult to create moving path on some complex geometric workpieces. Many finite element modelling softwares, like ANSYS, are the engineering simulation tools which provide strategies to calculations and engineering simulations. Its preprocess module of CutCell meshing is a general purpose meshing technique that produces elements on complex 3D geometry. The mesh grid on the surface to spray represents a good covered layer which can be the reference for creating robot moving path on the workpiece. This study gives a new ideal to combine this two technologies (or software) in order to realize auto-generation of the robot trajectory for thermal spraying.
