Abstract: |
This study presents the evaluation of 4 prospective thermal barrier coating systems for the gas turbine industry. These coatings represent an improvement in both lifetime and thermal properties over the existing production coating
Coatings were produced with either HVOF dual layer or Triplex sprayed bond coats of the same composition. Top coats were applied based on dysprosia stabilised zirconia with different coating architectures. One coating using a porosity former and the other using a dual layer solution using two powder morphologies.
Systems were tested for lifetime using both Thermo-cyclic fatigue and thermal shock testing.
Thermal properties were evaluated using the Laser flash analysis technique. This was performed on samples both before and after heat treatment. The results were then correlated to the changes in microstructure seen during SEM studies.
