Abstract: |
Ceramic coatings possess a high application potential. However, the high process temperatures of conventional thermal spray methods lead to undesirable phase transformations for some materials. Cold gas spraying seems to be beneficial, as for ceramic coatings no phase transformations have been observed so far. In this study, the bonding of cold-sprayed ceramic particles on metal substrates is elucidated by investigating single impact events obtained from wipe tests. Different feedstock powders were used, consisting of agglomerated TiO2-nanoparticles. The single particle impacts were characterized by SEM and confocal microscopy. The particles exhibit a different bonding to the substrate depending on substrate material and substrate temperature, powder properties and spray conditions. Among these parameters, powder characteristics seem to be of particular importance. The results allow for conclusions regarding favourable powder characteristics for cold spraying of ceramics.
