Binary fuel detonation spraying of WC/Co

 Abstract:
CCDS2000 detonation spray system was used for the binary fuel spraying of WC/Co powder. The particles-in-flight temperature and velocity were calculated and optimized for C2H2/C3H6/O2 and C2H2/C3H8/O2 detonation gas mixtures. The stable spraying mode was realized in the shot gun barrel because of formation of the stratified explosion charge as the result of the precise computer controlled consumption of gas components in CCDS2000. Standoff distance was varied from 50 mm up to 400 mm and substrate inclination relatively spraying direction was increased up to 60º. Splat formation was analyzed to define the optimum spraying mode. Coating properties as microstructure, microhardness, porosity, bonding strength, wear resistance, etc. were measured and it was found that binary fuel detonation spraying provides better quality of WC/Co coating compared to spraying with pure acetylene as a fuel. For example, for WC/Co (88/12 wt%) coatings: porosity is less than 0.5%; microhardness is about 1400Hv300; ASTM G65 abrasion wear is less than 1 mm3/1000 rev. It was found that the coating performance does not decrease strongly with the substrate inclination up to 60º, for example, abrasion wear increases by 25% only.
