Abstract: |
Suspension Plasma Spraying (SPS) have been recently identified as a promising technology for enhancement of Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs). Particularly, Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) coatings presenting columnar microstructures have shown some capabilities as TBCs. Low thermal conductivity (< 1 W.m-1.K-1) and high thermal lifetime are demonstrated for such as coatings. This study presents thermo-cyclic fatigue (TCF) behavior of SPS columnar coatings which differ by the compaction of columns from a well-separated to a compact pattern of columns. TCF tests consists in cycles where samples are heated in 15 min at 1 100 °C and maintained at this temperature during 1 hour before a cooling in 15 min below 80 °C. The failure criterion is fixed when at least 20 % of spallation of coating area occurred. The effect of bond coat material, surface preparation and YSZ columnar microstructure are studied. In some optimized cases, a lifetime exceeding 2000 cycles to failures is observed.
