Abstract: |
An analysis of cavitation erosion damage at the incubation stage of the coatings of E308L-17 stainless steel and Fe-C-Cr-Ti-Al steel deposited on an AISI 316L steel substrate was done. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to examine phase transformation. A scanning electron microscope (SEM), and a 3D optical profilometer were utilized to evaluate the eroded specimen surfaces. The incubation periods were determined based on material loss-time curve. Incubation periods were marked during durable tests, namely, 480 min for Fe-C-Cr-Ti-Al coating, 90 min for E308L-17 coating, and 60 min for AISI 316L substrate. SEM micrographs reveal that the mechanism of damage nucleation for the coatings is different. It is found that the cavitation erosion damage of E308L-17 coating begins at defects formed on the surface, whereas it is observed that the erosion occurring on Fe-C-Cr-Ti-Al coating forms at the grain boundaries and grows along them. This study shows the strong influence of martensitic transformation effect on the cavitation erosion resistance of a Fe-Cr-C-Al-Ti deposited layer with a high share of metastable austenite in the structure.
