 Abstract:
Discussion on the carcinogenicity of welding fumes is a matter under discussion for many years. Several organizations are studying evidence to understand the correlation between the access risk of lung cancer for welders and the wedding activities that may cause this effect.

In 2017, IARC published a monograph considering all welding fumes as carcinogenic. Nevertheless, IARC studies are purely on a scientific basis and are not intended to be transferred to any national or international law or requirement. Most recently the European Union started a discussion on the possible inclusion of an item connected with welding fumes in Annex 1 of Directive 2004/37/EC - carcinogens, mutagens or reprotoxic substances at work (CMRD).

IIW is active in the field since its foundation, and its commission VIII “Health and Safety and Environment” has always been very concentrated on the matter. As such, several editions of the “IIW Position Statement on Welding and Lung Cancer” were published. Furthermore IIW, in cooperation with EWF (European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting) and EWA (European Welding Association) is playing an active role in the discussion with the European Commission on the matter.
